National Youth Squad Player Assessment
To further enhance the identification process of our national players for the Hong Kong national youth squads, the Union has formulised a screening process. The system was successfully piloted last year and the following information outlines how players are nominated and the procedure of the assessment. Please click here for application form.
Nomination of Player:
  • The assessment programme is intended for players of at least “very good” standard. (All persons making nominations should note that to nominate players pf any lesser standard could be to the detriment of both the programme and the individual player concerned.)
  • Nomination of players should come from Head Coaches / Teachers
  • Player pro-forma to be completed and sent to the Union (see below)
    ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE:
    Phase 1 Generic skill testing/assessment

Assessment The players are assessed in the following areas:

    Handling, Running & Decision making
    Tackling
Ball Control and Decision making in Contact area
    Game sense
    Fitness Assessment
    Speed, Agility & Power

On completion players will be selected for the next phase.

Phase 2 Individual, Sub Unit and Unit Assessment. Forwards and Back sessions will be held to educate and assess the player’s ability in their individual position and to provide an opportunity for them to work in their selected Sub Unit and Unit groups:

Phase 3 - Trial Game a trial game will be held to assess the player’s ability in match play.

Assessors - Assessing player’s abilities is crucial to ensuring that the best young talent is identified. Assessors will be utilized from the following associations:
  • HKRFU Professional Staff
  • National Coaches
  • Club Coaches
  • Teachers

    Tries: Robert NAYLOR, Paul MOREHU

Comment from Head Coach, Ivan Torpey:
    22 Jan 2005:
Good solid day, the players are progressing well
    23 Jan 2005:
Having led East Timor Barbarians 10 – 0 at the half time. It was disappointing that the last play of the game resulted in a converted try, knocking Hong Kong out at the Quarter Final stage (final score Hong Kong 10:12 East Timor Barbarians) .
The tournament has wrapped up the third training camp and the players have made huge advances. They now have a clearer understanding of the style of play that their coaches (Rodney McIntosh and Dallas Seymour) are trying to implement. The tournament has also given the players some much-needed game play experience which is crucial to their development.
East Timor progress to the final losing against Australian Sprit which is their second team.
